The Home Office has successfully achieved 16th place in the Top 100 Apprentice Employers 2024. The rankings celebrate England’s outstanding employers. They recognise commitment to offering new apprenticeships, the diversity of those on programme, and the number of apprentices who successfully complete.
Home Office ranked higher than Amazon, EY, Rolls Royce, John Lewis, and the BBC and were also the second top ranked government department, just behind DWP.
This is a huge achievement, and testament to dedication and effort across the Home Office by the Apprenticeship Team, wider HR colleagues, apprentice champions and leads, line managers and the apprentices themselves.
How do apprenticeships support the wider government’s priorities?
Apprenticeships provide high quality work-based learning for both existing and new employees to help develop the skills and experience required to deliver our priorities of today and the future.
Improving line management capability is a key part of creating a Modern Civil Service and the Civil Service People Plan. Leadership and Management apprenticeships, which develop managers from entry level through to senior leaders, support the leadership learning that is available for Home Office colleagues. Entry level focuses on the tools and knowledge needed to lead confidently and deliver positive outcomes. Senior leader focuses on becoming a self-aware and analytical leader who can drive the organisation forward with confidence.
Apprenticeships increase the standard of skills, knowledge, behaviours, and develop technical and specialist skills in areas, such as data and digital. Apprentices achieve a nationally recognised qualification and/or professional accreditation, demonstrating their ability to perform at expected levels and deliver excellent public services.
What do our apprentices think?
A HEO apprentice from the Customer Service Group said “I have gained a lot from the course. It has made me more confident in how I handle myself and has given me a great sense of accomplishment. I highly recommend the apprenticeships on offer to anyone who is thinking about it.”
A Grade 6 apprentice from the Migration and Borders Group said “I would absolutely encourage others to undertake an apprenticeship. The time you invest in learning is so worth it, both for you and your employer. I can honestly say becoming an apprentice was the best thing I ever did for myself.”
Building an apprenticeship culture
The Home Office is committed to the apprenticeship agenda and supporting the Civil Service Apprenticeship Strategy 2022-2025. Home Office is aiming for ‘best in class’ in delivering a quality experience for all. A few things Home Office have done over the past year:
- worked closely with learning providers to ensure the learning meets the needs of our apprentices
- introduced inductions and drop-in sessions for operational apprentices, and exploring how to replicate for those in non-operational roles
- held Home Office’s first apprenticeship graduation event
- improved guidance and launched an apprentice newsletter
- launched the Apprentice Ambassador Network
This is just the start, and we will continue to build on this.
