A guest blog from Clive Martin, Head of the Government Risk Profession.
When you first think of risk management, you might be forgiven for picturing risk registers or lists of delivery hurdles but in today’s Civil Service, risk management is so much more. Effective risk management means taking smart, calculated risks to seize opportunities, improve outcomes and create lasting public value. The Government Risk Profession is at the heart of this, championing innovation, supporting confident decision-making and helping us all to be more productive and agile.
Improving risk management in government
We are already good at managing some risks, but there is room to improve across the entire public sector. Our focus is improving the way we manage risks that directly affect the government’s priority missions.
Risk professionals are involved in some of the most crucial work across government, dealing with the impact of uncertainty in everything we do, from policies and programmes to daily operations. The Risk Management Profession helps all civil servants handle this uncertainty, whether risk is your main focus or part of a wider role.
Risk roles are varied and offer valuable skills you can use anywhere. Standalone risk functions can exist to help others manage risk across the organisation and sometimes the risk management function is housed in strategy, finance, project delivery, policy, commercial or digital teams, amongst others.
By improving how we approach risk together, we can help create a more productive and agile state – one which is resilient, innovative, and equipped to meet today’s challenges and tomorrow’s opportunities.
